Overview
Chile's Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero (SAG) regulates imported wood packaging under a resolution known as Resolution 133, amended by Resolution 4782 of 2023. Imported pallets, crates and dunnage must be treated to ISPM 15 standards and bear the IPPC mark, and SAG publishes both the list of regulated packaging and a list of packaging exempt from certification, for example certain processed wood. Because Chile has a large forestry industry based on radiata pine, plant health authorities take wood-borne pests seriously: regional SAG offices in Biobío have reported interceptions of forest pests in imported packaging, and infested or unmarked material is subject to treatment, destruction or return. The first year of ISPM 15 enforcement was not confirmed, so that field is empty. Most imports enter via San Antonio and Valparaíso on the central coast, with San Vicente, Talcahuano and Lirquén serving the Biobío region where forestry exports also pass. Chile is a major exporter of fruit, wine, salmon and wood products, and its pallet producers are accredited by SAG to heat-treat and stamp pallets for these export chains. The common footprint is 1200 × 1000 mm, with 1200 × 800 mm used in European-linked trade. Rental pallets are present, but the retail and agricultural sectors often use locally built pallets. Exporters to Chile should use stamped pallets and keep treatment documents available for inspection.
